Some Environmentalists Say That the Oil Slick Could Cause Devastation to Sea Life
Taiwan Cargo Ship |
Same is the case here, more than 100 workers are hindered by this bad weather and all of their efforts to contain the slick. Earlier this month, the Taiwanese ship named T.S. Taipei, became stranded on a reef off the shore of Shihmen in New Taipei City.

Michael Lee, secretary general of the non-profit Society of Wilderness (SOW) raised his concern as “even if the oil stains can be removed swiftly, massive deaths of fish and other marine animals in the area are expected due to lack of oxygen in the water. It could take at least three years for the local ecological system to recover to some extent.”
Ever since the cargo ship ran aground on March 10, around 1.18 miles of coastline has been polluted and to cope with this problem, workers wearing protective gears were trying to remove oil from shore using buckets and solvents. Even the salvage operation has been hampered by this extreme weather which was trying to drain out ship’s oil tank.
What Cargo is Left on the Ship?
About 614 cargo containers and approximately over 200 tonnes of fuel is still on the ship. The cargo consists of textiles, machinery, furniture and other valuables. The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said that they are more concerned about those nine containers that have toxic chemicals and lubricant on them.

“The ship has fractured down the middle and could capsize anytime… if it capsizes, the remaining fuel could leak out and the cargo containers will fall into the sea, affecting the local coastline and ocean habitat,” added EPA.
