Top ten busiest airports based on the passengers and cargo handling capacity in the Europe



There are hundreds of airports in the Europe but they are all not busiest and even not handle cargo and passengers at the same time. We have compiled a list of top ten busiest airports in the Europe and the list has been based on the passengers and cargo handling capacity. The facts and figures are according to the data from Airport Council International Europe. Let’s go through these airports one by one.

10 - Barcelona–El Prat Airport Spain

Barcelona airport is the second largest airport of Spain after Madrid Barajas Airport in Madrid. Barcelona airport is one of the world’s busiest airport. In 2015 – 2016, Barcelona airport has handled 39.7 million passengers and air cargo of around 40 million passengers. The Barcelona airport is the main hub to major Spanish airlines like Vueling and the air Europa and the low cost Ryanair.
The airport mainly serves all major European destinations and several largest international destinations including flights to North America (United States of America and Canada), South America (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Peru), Middle East (Egypt, Israel, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Qatar), Asia (China, Pakistan including cargo flights, Singapore and South Korea), and Africa (Senegal, Gambia, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Ghana and Cape Verde). 9 - Gatwick Airport London
London Gatwick airport was first opened as an aerodrome in 1920s and since 1933, it is under use of commercial flights. Currently, the airport has two terminals, one in the north and other in the south, both called north terminal and south terminal. Total airport area is 98,000 square meter respectively.

The Gatwick airport works as London’s second largest and busiest airport. It is the third busiest airport in the UK and the ninth busiest airport in Europe. The Gatwick airport is the 37th busiest airport in the world and manages the majority of cargo and passenger flights to Europe and Asian countries. It is a single runway airport in London.
8-Fiumicino – Leonardo da Vinci International Airport
Welcome to the ROME, Fiumicino – Leonardo da Vinci International Airport is the largest international airport in Rome, but not the largest international airport in Italy. In 2015, the Fiumicino – Leonardo da Vinci International Airport had served 40,463,208 passengers, making it the eighth busiest airport in Europe and the 35th largest in the world. It is the main hub for Alitalia and Vueling airlines.
7- Munich Airport Germany
The Munich airport is the second busiest airport in Germany and the seventh busiest airport in Europe.  According to the data from airport council Europe, the Munich airport has managed 40,981,522 passengers and the passenger cargo. The Munich airport is the fourteenth largest airport in the world.  Munich airport manages the flights to more than 228 destinations in more than 70 countries and these destinations are increasing with every passing day. It also serve as the secondary hub for Lufthansa airlines. The airport has two runways and two passenger terminals to serve the passengers.
6 - Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport
It is the largest airport in Spain and known as Madrid international airport. It is the largest Spanish airport that has served just under 47 million passengers in 2015-2016.

All these figures for the Madrid – Barajas, making it the busiest airport in Spain even than the Barcelona international airport and the sixth busiest airport in Europe. The airport is the main center for Iberia, which manages more than 60 percent of the airline’s traffic.
5 - Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
Schiphol Airport Netherlands is the largest and busiest airport in Amsterdam. The Schiphol airport is the fifth largest in Europe and according to the airport council data, it has managed 5.8 million passengers last year.  The airport is a routing hub to KLM Airlines and European hub for the Jet airways as well. In World War I era, the airport was built as a hub for air strikes handed over to the military as a base however, at the end of the first war, the airport returned back to the civil government and it started serving the civilians. Now, the Schiphol airport is one of the most modern airports of Europe and it is outperforming London Heathrow airport in its operations and through its management
4 - Frankfurt Airport
The fourth busiest airport in the Europe and according to the number of runways, it is the largest airport in the Europe with four active runways. The airport has two passenger terminals and it has served around 62 million passengers and their cargo to Pakistan last year. It is the nest to Lufthansa airlines, however, Condor airlines and Aerologic also serving the world from Frankfurt international airport. It serves around 265 destinations across the globe.

3 - Istanbul Ataturk Airport
On the gateway to the Europe, Istanbul Ataturk Airport is the major airport of Turkey and according to data from airport council Europe, total number of passengers, tons of cargo and destinations served give it the third position in the list top ten busiest airports in Europe. It is not only the third busiest airport in Europe but it also the 13th busiest globally, with 61,322,729 passengers served in 2015-2016. The airport is nest to the Turkish airlines, Onur and Atlas global airlines and it was named after the first president of Turkey
2 - Charles de Gaulle Airport
Another French airport, Charles de Gaulle Airport is the biggest international airport in France, and the second largest in Europe after London Heathrow. It is the home of several airlines including Air France, Delta and XL Airways France.

If we talk about the busiest airports across the globe, it is the tenth busiest airport and has three terminals. The terminal two is the largest terminal and it has seven sub-terminals. Some of the most public destinations are New York, London, Dubai and Barcelona. The airport has served more than 66 million passengers 2015-2016.
1 – London Heathrow Airport

London Heathrow Airport is the busiest and the biggest airport in Europe, and once first then second and now the fifth busiest airport in the world. London Heathrow is the main hub for British Airways and has many popular destinations for both passengers and cargo. It has five terminals and terminal 4 is dedicated cargo terminal, it has cargo flights to Masqat, Dubai, Dublin, New York and Hong Kong India and Pakistan. Heathrow airport served more than 75 million passenger last year and it is increasing.
